<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Hello! It's me again...making pillows again. First off, I'll waste a line or two of type to say how I lament leaving the blog so long and how sorry I am to notice that this trend is growing with tons of bloggers I admire and follow. We're decamping blogs and Flickr in droves for Instagram which I love but which is such a limited platform to interact and understand process.<br />
<br />
So of course, I'm posting two photos I took with Instagram.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hhd6-qDyAfA/VNeSQcjk6CI/AAAAAAAAB2Q/mz3GbE2joVQ/s1600/IMG_20150208_101838.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hhd6-qDyAfA/VNeSQcjk6CI/AAAAAAAAB2Q/mz3GbE2joVQ/s1600/IMG_20150208_101838.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I made two pillow covers to spruce up my living room using Anna Maria Horner velveteen from her LouLouthi fabric line and backed them with Minky Cuddle 3. The minky was a mis-order from Fabric.com - it's labeled "hot pink" but it's such a pale color it just wasn't what I had in mind for the project I intended it -- but it's also too soft and cuddly to waste.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span">I had green nylon zippers on hand in approximately the right size and I love the contrast they add even if practically no one but me will notice them. The inner cushions are </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 30px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">FJÄDRAR</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span"> 20" squares from IKEA ($6 for feathers!)</span><br />
<br />
If you're wondering about sewing with minky, it was easy. I searched for tips online and so I did sew with the minky on bottom using a walking foot (except for the zipper installation which was normal. The only difference was that as I worked with it, the minky stretched a tad and ended up being more of a rectangle than a square. I simply stitched using the velveteen as my guide and trimmed the excess Minky before turning the cover right side out. I also used tons of pins (about ever 1.5 inches) as well as a ballpoint needle on the advice of the gal who sold me the velveteen. Everything worked like a charm and I'm eager to make more projects with these super soft fabrics.<br />
<br />
I hope to continue to post about my projects here but feel free to come find me on IG these days (I'm @Missenota there.) I'm badly in need of a new computer and so even interacting with my favorite software and programs is difficult these days on an older Mac operating system. Until then, the phone will have to suffice.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Are you sprucing up the home for springtime? I'd love to hear about it.<br />

I've written my first quilt tutorial and it's over at Sew, Mama, Sew! It's called <b><i>Ladder Lattice</i></b>. (Here's <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/2014/05/ladder-lattice-quilt/" target="_blank">the link</a>.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB0W6xeN2Blayg26wJRRlCHbpH80grJU2y8EBGuChhEj1RfFvIUTseIHm_NC_0pCN8ZGdQOjzIFmXF-omrCngA17NtWgxisFdSh2cOgqRP7qgnJOe1AcfL7qn7FntvokS3vDS05usgdu8/s1600/IMG_8622.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB0W6xeN2Blayg26wJRRlCHbpH80grJU2y8EBGuChhEj1RfFvIUTseIHm_NC_0pCN8ZGdQOjzIFmXF-omrCngA17NtWgxisFdSh2cOgqRP7qgnJOe1AcfL7qn7FntvokS3vDS05usgdu8/s1600/IMG_8622.jpg" height="640" width="322" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The blocks are 12.5" and you can easily make three from a fat quarter so it's really up to you how big of a project you want to make. Although I agonized over my photography skills -- I usually do -- I am totally pleased with the quilt and design itself. I think it would look gorgeous in solids or just two colors too so I'll probably be making another one soon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WVV2KiHBmFs/U3tJy7o5k0I/AAAAAAAABoQ/2mhCd9gDt9k/s1600/IMG_8627.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WVV2KiHBmFs/U3tJy7o5k0I/AAAAAAAABoQ/2mhCd9gDt9k/s1600/IMG_8627.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
A couple of firsts on this project. I didn't use any pins, just Elmer's washable school glue with a fine tip. You squeeze a thin line inside the 1/4-inch seam allowance and touch press with the iron. It holds everything perfectly through stitching so I hardly had any trimming to do which saved fabric loss.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QEyQl3LRq6Y/U3tI8VN_2nI/AAAAAAAABoI/6IHIu6RVrcE/s1600/IMG_8594.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QEyQl3LRq6Y/U3tI8VN_2nI/AAAAAAAABoI/6IHIu6RVrcE/s1600/IMG_8594.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a>The second new thing is my walking foot. I finally ordered an easy-feed sewing foot for my freebie machine. Now I'm <i>invested</i>! Although my stitching actually suffered a little, especially in-the-ditch; my speed really increased. I know I'll be practicing more with it and making bigger quilts in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ7dLS6_2d4HgA8AF6aIh__OPLMEsiBmnqcko528KZK-Uv6ByXNtuwJzMNrCGEuF0b8bRUbAunZClSHPocJaxwSR8fm9RvstPg5iTO90xxgx2NSBuLtH2AkINHdRd88cDvTeVOQzLQ9cc/s1600/IMG_8448.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ7dLS6_2d4HgA8AF6aIh__OPLMEsiBmnqcko528KZK-Uv6ByXNtuwJzMNrCGEuF0b8bRUbAunZClSHPocJaxwSR8fm9RvstPg5iTO90xxgx2NSBuLtH2AkINHdRd88cDvTeVOQzLQ9cc/s1600/IMG_8448.JPG" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
It's really satisfying to see a project from my sketchbook come to life. This one is so much like my pitch drawing that it's uncanny. I designed it specifically to use fat quarters (7 prints) from Erin McMorris' <i>Forest Hill </i>by Free Spirit.<br />
<br />
I'm still learning and growing as a quilter but the design part of it is a key element for me. When I brainstormed ideas, this was one of five I pitched and then, as I constructed the quilt, I jotted down notes for two new projects. I so hope that someone finds the tutorial useful as it would totally please me to see more quilts made from it. Since I've really learned to sew through online tutorials, it means so much to me to give back to that process. <br />
<br />
It's also the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/05/16/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2014/#comment-1080524" target="_blank">Blogger's Quilt Festival</a> this week so I'm entering <b><i>Ladder Lattice</i></b> in the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/05/16/bloggers-quilt-festival-original-design-quilts/" target="_blank">Original Design Quilts Category</a>. Just because I can and it feels so good.<br />
<br />
<br />
This quilt leaves 10 inch squares (actually, a little more) for scraps so I'm working on a pattern that will use those next. Please come back to check it out.<br />
<br />
That's it for now. Thanks for stopping by!<br />

Last month, I had to miss our guild meeting because I had concert tickets. So that's how I was inspired to use a free <b>Penguin and Fish</b> embroidery pattern (the one you get for subscribing to the <a href="http://forms.aweber.com/form/74/1029272274.htm" target="_blank">email newsletter</a>) for the little animals on my coasters. Stitched on Essex linen, backed with <a href="http://www.artgalleryfabrics.com/cgi-bin/fabricshop/gallery.cgi?Category=79" target="_blank">Indian Summer</a>, and pepped-up with some scraps -- including Carolyn Friedlander's <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/architextures/AFR-13502-12/" target="_blank">Ledger</a>, my very favorite print in the world. <br />
<br />
These were so easy to make and reminded me how much I love hand embroidery.<br />

So guess what I'll be doing this weekend.<br />

I made a little house-shaped quilt inspired by <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/286330488782868976/" target="_blank">this photo</a> of the vaulted ceiling in my partners' awesome little sewing room. She's Samantha, she's from British Columbia in Canada, and her blog is called <a href="http://alwaysmakinglifeprettier.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Making Life Prettier</a>. The little cross-stitch on the label is on honor of the awesome quilt she made for the swap.<br />

She's a pretty talented quilter; Fantastic Mr. Fox here stole a ton of hearts. Boy was I surprised to find out those sneaky swap mama's of the DQS partnered us to each other. This little fella (and some coveted extras: a zipper pouch and a fat quarter of Violet Craft) arrived in my mailbox last week. It is my new, favorite-est thing.<br />

<br />
It's totally the year of the fox at my house with this quilt, my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/1197421@N20/" target="_blank">Pillow Talk Swap</a> pillow made by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/peanutpants/" target="_blank">Kristine Holland</a>, and the <a href="http://www.monaluna.com/blog/blog/2013/08/new-collections/" target="_blank">Monaluna Meadow</a> fabric challenge for the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild. (More about that in March when we do the BIG REVEAL!)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The only bad news is that I'm still waiting for <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/2013/12/pillow-poppin.html" target="_blank">the package</a> I mailed out December 2nd to arrive at its destination in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I know, I know...that's a long time! I've never actually lost something forever in the post though so I hold out hope but that line is stretching thiiiiinnnnn. (Edited to add that it finally arrived in March!)<br />
<br />
Whelp. That's about it, folks.<br />

We've been straying from big gift-giving for several years, especially at Christmas. My family abolished gift exchange a couple of years ago and rather than disappointing anyone, it's really cut down on holiday stress. Now, we just have a select few on my husbands' side that we still wrap things up for in December. Jer's grandpa is a big Denver Broncos football fan (so is Jeremy and so am I) so I made -- <i>ahem, skirting the license laws here</i> -- a Denver Broncos throw pillow. Here it is in all its glory:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtTPEeuDKxG67jxP9kCLaJODs5AUQ3RGcxEvvJPt-8OFJgUbVtrervKfc43FFx16uJHWVhOAnpnXmBPKK8FL8hsxxQxlFckr3YHuwn_HZslRzAxsFQ0VSgmzNNHMG4h7nWmACeDKqmSOc/s1600/BroncosPillow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtTPEeuDKxG67jxP9kCLaJODs5AUQ3RGcxEvvJPt-8OFJgUbVtrervKfc43FFx16uJHWVhOAnpnXmBPKK8FL8hsxxQxlFckr3YHuwn_HZslRzAxsFQ0VSgmzNNHMG4h7nWmACeDKqmSOc/s1600/BroncosPillow.jpg" height="640" width="364" /></a></div>
The front has a simple grid of quilting in Aurifil thread. The mane did not turn out how I envisioned but after cutting the blue appliqué, I realized my original plan would be too complicated and might stretch the fabric so I improvised with the zig-zag stitch in orange. The lettering did turn out legible though and I feel like it gets its point across.<br />
<br />
The back is my favorite part. I made a cathedral window block but it's BIG. I mean, it's twenty inches big. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_TmyiNJfsxP3ED3CA1wgPxoStAtW8GVECsbQW08yiQiWqpfboprU41qqVyxo3sm3pGowt5RPksUvSVJqud-RBjhZ_eYzx-Nw5CGG2uUv5-LzlzyOCihyFtlUL0sy_CA6WCrmF_UVzes8/s1600/CathedralWindow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_TmyiNJfsxP3ED3CA1wgPxoStAtW8GVECsbQW08yiQiWqpfboprU41qqVyxo3sm3pGowt5RPksUvSVJqud-RBjhZ_eYzx-Nw5CGG2uUv5-LzlzyOCihyFtlUL0sy_CA6WCrmF_UVzes8/s1600/CathedralWindow.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
That means, I cut four twenty-inch squares and folded them down into ten-inchers and then sewed those four together to make the foundation. I picked some favorite blues and oranges from the stash and used a glue stick to keep them attached while I sewed. I can't say it enough, cathedral windows are fun! I did end up covering the intersections with buttons but they didn't look bad before.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizxAoFpxNJ7h9Lp4OPKVxhAGq92mUOkScMPP6VHTnj8sqxRuME1n35Qm9b9RYym2meJ19KBsllejiwH_6BDeZ4aZafTBOKhCC5MeIHva8a4zKhOs5cU-MzIiJSWCF77L5S1VVYtqMRefs/s1600/gluestick.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizxAoFpxNJ7h9Lp4OPKVxhAGq92mUOkScMPP6VHTnj8sqxRuME1n35Qm9b9RYym2meJ19KBsllejiwH_6BDeZ4aZafTBOKhCC5MeIHva8a4zKhOs5cU-MzIiJSWCF77L5S1VVYtqMRefs/s1600/gluestick.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
There's a zipper at the bottom and a twenty-inch down pillow insert inside. Jer's grandpa had to move into an assisted living situation recently and although his little apartment is accessible and clean, it doesn't have as many touches of home as he was used to. We didn't make it to Montana to see Grandpa unwrap but I heard he gave it a long hug and that makes me feel really good to think about.<br />
<br />

It's part of Mollie's "<a href="http://wildolive.blogspot.com/search/label/25%20crafts%20of%20christmas" target="_blank">25 Crafts of Christmas</a>." Adorable! And it stitches up quick because it's so teeny.<br />

<br />
I don't know if any of you watch any Cartoon Network at your houses but I just love <i>Adventure Time</i> and this little, swaddled Christ-child kind of reminds me of Finn when he sleeps.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Speaking of Adventure Time, that reminds me of this quote by Cake the cat! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/WIaceMHV69A?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>"Sweet babies!"</b></i></div>
<br />
I'm a sucker for nativity sets. More specifically, I can't resist rescuing orphaned saviors when I find them lost and alone among an incomplete crèche. And while I <i>don't</i> want you to read too much into this, I <i>do</i> want to share my collection of baby Jesus figurines with you today. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wait! Where are you going??</div>

Of course it's super dark and snowy today so I couldn't get a great photo before sending off this pillow to my swap partner but you get the idea of just how cute and soft it is, right? It's made for a 20-inch cushion insert.<br />

The little Airstream trailer (my favorite!) is foundation-pieced from a pattern I picked up for one dollar during the Minnesota Quilt Shop Hop this summer. The silver is actually aluminized fabric made for ironing board covers which was fun to work with. The trees are raw-edge appliquéd and then quilted over in concentric rings. The word, "NOEL" is quilted too; I used blue, 100-weight cotton Aurifil thread (the one on the grey spool.)</div>

On the back, I quilted horizontal lines over the Moda Oh Deer! aqua print. The top includes a small appliqué fawn and for that quilting, I just followed the dotted lines on the Angela Walters' Legacy hexagons. I added a zipper and a label under the flap.<br />

You might be thinking, "Not another white pillow cover!" But yes. I cannot help myself. It's in the mail now...on its way to a faraway land. This was for the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/1197421@N20" target="_blank">Pillow Talk Swap</a> - Holiday Edition - on Flickr.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Now it's on to the next sewing project...or perhaps putting up the Christmas tree...or maybe just pressing my nose up against the frosty windowpane in anticipation of the postwoman and possibly a pillow for me! </div>

I have a few -- but in the spirit of not repeating the most popular ones (my rotary cutter, its <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/p/about-chips.html" target="_blank">holder</a>, self-healing mat, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/missenota/9099795007/" target="_blank">thread snips</a>, the miraculous sewing machine itself...) I usually share one that most people overlook or in-my-humble-opinion, under value. This time, in honor of National Sewing Month and under the tutelage of <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/2013/09/national-sewing-month-my-favorite-sewing-tool-a-link-party/" target="_blank">Sew, Mama, Sew!</a> here is my favorite sewing tool. <i>Duh-dun-uhn-Dah!</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR6l5w_kzR-FE88-aXCGVNJn0egRAJY1yl8cNbZLNHiwXFetW4E1_bWyYaKMt11u_lPKp4_sUXr8JCPAJLELIJq3m9yDkQasBPzmeIdjykyQCdeG8o_QHaYoU8zlGwqdm_w3yO2PrpV7s/s1600/PincushionCover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="636" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR6l5w_kzR-FE88-aXCGVNJn0egRAJY1yl8cNbZLNHiwXFetW4E1_bWyYaKMt11u_lPKp4_sUXr8JCPAJLELIJq3m9yDkQasBPzmeIdjykyQCdeG8o_QHaYoU8zlGwqdm_w3yO2PrpV7s/s640/PincushionCover.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i>
Sure - there are so many pretty pin cushions out there to love. I have collected, received, and even <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/2012/11/busy-bee.html" target="_blank">made</a> a few. I actually use them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lUk1kCJksq8/Ujd8nPN8cSI/AAAAAAAABNg/yrY8qPvQmJc/s1600/PincushionCollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="472" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lUk1kCJksq8/Ujd8nPN8cSI/AAAAAAAABNg/yrY8qPvQmJc/s640/PincushionCollage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But nothing compares to my one-true-pincushion-love, the <u>magnetic</u> variety. <br />
<br />
I'll admit, I was biased from the beginning because mom had one when I was little. Hers is blue and round (like the <a href="http://www.joann.com/grabbit-magnetic-pin-cushion-assorted-colors/prd11083/" target="_blank">Grabbit</a>) and still working hard at her house next to the Pfaff she sewed my little girl clothes on. It's got some heft and so it can double as a pattern weight. When I started machine sewing almost two years years ago, I knew I wanted one like mom's. Here's another pic of mine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDPjt4f2-bbfCJM73kERl08bgCC2KVapZWh0u7XpiNg183wcEPEH4ILy5AxG2wM3FXacp9bmWRBnsiZeexcmJ30fAQyuYDnO5-rwKU-uC8ZVcfgyIULlxO1TJDFStJ8aiv0cErHhp8I9o/s1600/Pinmagic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDPjt4f2-bbfCJM73kERl08bgCC2KVapZWh0u7XpiNg183wcEPEH4ILy5AxG2wM3FXacp9bmWRBnsiZeexcmJ30fAQyuYDnO5-rwKU-uC8ZVcfgyIULlxO1TJDFStJ8aiv0cErHhp8I9o/s400/Pinmagic.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
It's a Pin-Pal...and it's magic!<br />
<br />
If you aren't among the devoted already, I'll tell you why it's a superior sewing helper. It <b>grabs</b> your pins. It <b>holds</b> your pins. It <b><u>finds</u></b> your pins.<br />
<br />
Let me explain its usefulness. <br />
<br />
When you are sewing along your pinned seam, you can keep your full attention on what you are stitching because the magnetic pincushion will snatch/catch/grip/<i>grab</i> a pin tossed near its direction. It even tells you it's made the connection with a little "chh" sound as it wrestles each errant pin home while you drive along. I'm right handed, so I keep mine on the front right side of my machine. It travels with me to the cutting table for pinning and back to the machine for unpinning while I sew. That's the <i>holding</i> part.<br />
<br />
When you do drop a small, sharp object (or your sewing machine needle breaks in spectacular fashion.) And especially if you're like me and you most often sew in your bare feet...your magnetic pincushion is there to help you out of a dangerous situation. Simply wave it around over the floor in the suspected vicinity of impact and it'll tell you with its happy little "chh" when it finds it. <br />
<br />
Piece of mind, people. That's priceless.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZvpITYxFV-A/Ujd8Lr29HJI/AAAAAAAABNQ/990FnIcynLk/s1600/Clovermagnet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZvpITYxFV-A/Ujd8Lr29HJI/AAAAAAAABNQ/990FnIcynLk/s640/Clovermagnet.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For travel, I bought a second one. The <a href="http://www.joann.com/magnetic-pin-caddy-assorted-colors-purple-teal-pink/prd59591/" target="_blank">Clover brand has a snap lid</a> so my pins won't get into any trouble while packed away. It also has a nice indentation for your fingers to help you pick up every last pin easily. This actually comes in really handy for needles because they lay so flat and usually find their way to the bottom of the stack.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcNOayL7NJEK1DUVrPergCotTH5evvz4sIhUWbxZRwGzk65jh4PHiDEkx1cCQEfhcHgZxOfg9cjYt33EFJ40lmtYWWntWsqU3Gy62K62jP3ng2aG959VECNam2epjOnXpy8nQ3MnRrenM/s1600/NeedleNest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcNOayL7NJEK1DUVrPergCotTH5evvz4sIhUWbxZRwGzk65jh4PHiDEkx1cCQEfhcHgZxOfg9cjYt33EFJ40lmtYWWntWsqU3Gy62K62jP3ng2aG959VECNam2epjOnXpy8nQ3MnRrenM/s640/NeedleNest.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
All magnets are not equal, however. I really like the concept of <a href="http://www.joann.com/collins-needle-nest/prd11097/" target="_blank">The Needle Nest</a> but it's power of attraction doesn't measure up. I loved it while I was finishing each set of loose threads as I started and stopped machine quilting but when it got knocked off the table open -- <i>by a bad kitty</i> -- my needles didn't stay put.<br />
<br />
If plastic is simply not your thing, you can make a more aesthetically pleasing variety out of a saucer, footed ceramic bowl, or wide shallow teacup. I saw t<a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2010/07/magnetic-pin-dish-tutorial.html" target="_blank">his idea</a> on Amy Smart's blog, Diary of a Quilter, and there are plenty of neat-oh examples in a <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=magnetic%20pin%20cushion" target="_blank">Pinterest search</a>. You glue a neodymium (powerful button) magnet to the bottom and viola! Of course, this one wouldn't make the "chh", it might be more of a "dnk" but you get the idea.<br />
<br />
That's it. It's my fave and now you all know it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy pinning.</div>

<br />
Wait. Somebody photo-bombed that last shot but you get the idea... <br />
<br />
It's tricky to photograph but I stitched the words "sit" and "stay" on the backs of the pillows. Because I used white thread on white polka dots, it sort of blends in but it's a nice surprise when you snuggle in close with your little pillow pals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jT-DNNm9ZUU/UjNw9izq0iI/AAAAAAAABM0/SiZu345s8bw/s1600/Stitchin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jT-DNNm9ZUU/UjNw9izq0iI/AAAAAAAABM0/SiZu345s8bw/s320/Stitchin.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'm really pleased with the effect. These started out as some simple embroidery from free patterns online (because I was IN LOVE with <a href="http://hopscotchlane.blogspot.com/2013/04/puppy-embroidery-pillow.html" target="_blank">this one</a> I found at Hopscotch Lane...and I already had the polka dots.) Since I long ago stitched my English-paper-pieced hexies into <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/2013/07/madrona-road-challenge.html" target="_blank">another pillow</a>, I decided to finish these for the summer handwork challenge at my guild. I just love wooden embroidery hoops, hangers, clothespins, you name it. So in order to add my own spin, I added embroidery hoops with raw-edge appliqué. I quilted one with a compass star pattern and the other with a sort of life bouy shape. They are 16 inches square.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
That's what I've been up to.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And did I mention I won another <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/p/block-of-month.html" target="_blank">block lottery</a> at the Minneapolis MQG meeting? Did I mention only three of us made the Cathedral Window blocks?! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihuok5_JjH3iS7PEBrpaB4LsoTSAdVkXhlMzixtb6Nu1M80aZqKywVrwSvN6nEQzaB40cx77P8aTDMIgWKUiIfhs2wawk8QQrUUDprDHLAHByfFm6F50eVFkFq7bBD3Dak789JXx7mXOM/s1600/Cathedral+Window.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihuok5_JjH3iS7PEBrpaB4LsoTSAdVkXhlMzixtb6Nu1M80aZqKywVrwSvN6nEQzaB40cx77P8aTDMIgWKUiIfhs2wawk8QQrUUDprDHLAHByfFm6F50eVFkFq7bBD3Dak789JXx7mXOM/s640/Cathedral+Window.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
Anywho...what should I make with them? They are each ten inches. I'm thinking anything from a sewing machine cover, a window valance, a pet bed, or a bigger quilt.<br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>I think I may have a vital source for some more 1930s prints...</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i>
<i><br /></i>
<br />
But that's enough for now. It's the weekend!<br />

It's the "Piece of Cake Shopping Bag" from Ayumi Takahashi's book, <b>Patchwork, Please!</b> (Or pretty close to it in any case!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidSLNHfb1WfBs41RFOkRLataCTqCLUKfU_NITBNOEJugv6pPPkVHCrB5JIUlgwRQLfOUvCHUNbKqiLhBW5J-JaoeM7IMHLF9x_yn9uowi18dWgBpkv-x8gilzG-qScjXm6yiV42TiyNR0/s1600/CakeBagFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidSLNHfb1WfBs41RFOkRLataCTqCLUKfU_NITBNOEJugv6pPPkVHCrB5JIUlgwRQLfOUvCHUNbKqiLhBW5J-JaoeM7IMHLF9x_yn9uowi18dWgBpkv-x8gilzG-qScjXm6yiV42TiyNR0/s640/CakeBagFront.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I fretted over fabric choices for quite awhile and finally settled on a strawberry theme as I had a fat quarter of Kokka Trefle strawberry print (thanks, Amber at <a href="http://dappleandgrey.typepad.com/my-blog/" target="_blank">Dapple & Grey</a>!) and a yard of Heather Ross' Briar Rose strawberry in orange. I made two, outside pockets in coordinating colors. The main bag is Essex Linen and the lining is a decor weight polka dot from IKEA.<br />

But before getting to any of that, I comissioned the hand-woven straps. They are the real stars of this show. My dad made them on his inkle loom. He just started weaving this year and his work is really impressive. He's actually about to start a beginner course at the <a href="http://www.textilecentermn.org/" target="_blank">Textile Center of Minnesota</a> because he doesn't want any "bad habits"to sink in from the self-teaching phase. <br />
<br />
I chose the pattern out of a library book and the colors from his growing collection of crochet thread; he wove them over a few days last week. I did notice that because of the color order I chose, the baby pink and the natural white look identical but the straps are really beautiful and I'm extremely glad (and proud!) he made them for me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WBFerDi1IbY/UidB9TgcqnI/AAAAAAAABLk/EEklI2BZz3s/s1600/inklecloseup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WBFerDi1IbY/UidB9TgcqnI/AAAAAAAABLk/EEklI2BZz3s/s640/inklecloseup.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Now to the unsavory part of the program. Mistakes were made in this project and once they started, they never really stopped. First, I misread the pattern and sewed my beloved straps to the longer, end panels rather than the side pieces. Once I figured this out, I didn't want to risk damaging the straps or the linen by removing all the stitches holding them so I sort of stalled progress while I tried to decide whether to trim around the straps and cut new side panels (wasting more of my precious linen) or to plow ahead with a slightly off-dimensions bag and only a new base panel. Economy won out in the end and I decided to plow ahead and cut my lining to match (adding <a href="http://www.vanillajoy.com/easy-zippered-pocket-tutorial.html" target="_blank">a zipper pocket</a> and a patch pocket to the lining panels and some strawberry appliqués to the outside which made me feel pretty good about things again at that point.) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7YPhEYvA_TABjFydy0thRg3BdJhlL5CWJ42azAIOXle01i-rF0GM8S0EW6rRGBEfi5DG9A43lM50STrvbLetNRr0Sl8jGTg5X0DfnfgmSCsZhfOj6fOOtsSFNwjdrB2oJSZD0KCGx0Y0/s1600/lakesunset.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7YPhEYvA_TABjFydy0thRg3BdJhlL5CWJ42azAIOXle01i-rF0GM8S0EW6rRGBEfi5DG9A43lM50STrvbLetNRr0Sl8jGTg5X0DfnfgmSCsZhfOj6fOOtsSFNwjdrB2oJSZD0KCGx0Y0/s640/lakesunset.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Already behind schedule (because of the stalling) , I packed the pieces up and toted my project to my parents' lake cabin to finish. <i>Where I ignored it and generally had lake-filled, end-of-summer fun for a few days.</i> It wasn't until Sunday night, sewing machine set up on a card table in the front window, that I realized there were more problems. Down to the wire, my drawstring panels were too short so I made some discreet tucks in the lining (problem solved! No one will know!) but of course, the outside bag was also too large so then I had to make more tucks -out there- for the world to see. Even worse, I was rushing and so there are tons of tiny folds in the seam - some of them so bad I had to rip them out and repair but always rushing because the sun was going down right in front of me. Finally, I had it complete and quickly added the drawstring and some bed pillows. Then I ran out to the dock and took some pics in the dying light (which I heavily filtered to look much brighter) and arranged a ride into town so I could upload the pics to Flickr and link up with the host blog. I celebrated with s'mores around the campfire.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsc1CtXD9LFyq1fFx-GvOxMuyQHattwbdVpMslaO9Yeab08CCu4vW1mLT_LbLjjwiykZ0GwI7LJtpyFeA09bRkpMpP61omeZTLosB-ocuRjG7GY4M3u985jhjOuwpsDCW_o_J6GqANSIE/s1600/dontlookbag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsc1CtXD9LFyq1fFx-GvOxMuyQHattwbdVpMslaO9Yeab08CCu4vW1mLT_LbLjjwiykZ0GwI7LJtpyFeA09bRkpMpP61omeZTLosB-ocuRjG7GY4M3u985jhjOuwpsDCW_o_J6GqANSIE/s640/dontlookbag.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There it is. A finish and a failure - of sorts. I've learned that procrastination and neglecting problems doesn't work quite so well in sewing the way it worked in writing essays for school. I should have read the pattern more closely, I should have employed the seam ripper in the first place, I should go back and cut some new drawstring panels at the very least. And maybe I still will. The bag is beautiful after all. And I cherish those straps! And I'd love to use this bag for toting finishes to guild meetings in the future because it means something to me; it means a lot of things to me.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
It's my favorite time of year, the <a href="http://www.mnstatefair.org/" target="_blank">Minnesota State Fair</a>. This year, I went on opening day. We had a fantastic time. And here's my report.<br />
<br />
Before I start, how about a little backstory? I'm a transplanted Minnesotan. I first went to the fair when I was eleven and it has been an important part of my summers ever since. <i>Confession: <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #660000;">On deployments, I was more devastated to miss the fair than Christmas at home</span></i>. That first year, my parents took us early in the morning (in order to get a good parking spot.) We bought a carton of orange juice and breakfast at the little grocery store by the barns that mostly only fair workers know about. We walked every inch of the fairgrounds: the barns, the Midway, machinery hill, and the Fine Arts building. For lunch, we went back to the cool, shady grass by our car and ate out of our cooler. My parents saved and saved their money but they never kept us from having fun and going out -- we just did it the old-fashioned way. When I met my guy, I introduced him to the great get-together and now he's a devoted follower too....but we're quite a bit more extravagant than in the old days.<br />
<br />
I always spend time in the Creative Activities building. I was greatly impressed as a child when my aunt won a ribbon for two needlepoint Christmas stockings - with my and my sisters' names on them. I still use that stocking and ever since, I've dreamed of entering something I made into the fair and seeing it on display. This year, I finally did it. With the prompting of <a href="http://minneapolismodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">my quilt guild</a>, I made a Quilt-on-a-Stick for the needle arts category #228. The theme changes every year, 2013's is "Tattoos and Body Adornment at the Fair" which perplexed a lot of quilters but I plowed ahead, determined to have something to enter and came up with this one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRP0wgLm6nOBgOOHT1iqZ5dGQ9kEnBaVvgBTjJ4EVz6HypNb4p44zXNhPzWT06jnpSeGYKp4pdAz9Ba3x9nm2c-gFRRBv28ZXhnBdAQaPQLS0TocBohzk7fLyUgca5pI6lbc2Y01t1YDQ/s1600/Quilt-on-a-Stick+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRP0wgLm6nOBgOOHT1iqZ5dGQ9kEnBaVvgBTjJ4EVz6HypNb4p44zXNhPzWT06jnpSeGYKp4pdAz9Ba3x9nm2c-gFRRBv28ZXhnBdAQaPQLS0TocBohzk7fLyUgca5pI6lbc2Y01t1YDQ/s640/Quilt-on-a-Stick+Collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It's not a tattoo but it is <i>a piercin</i>g. My goal was to do my best and to have a little quilt that I could hang on my wall and remember the experience by and I know I succeeded. I just love this cow! She's foundation pieced from a pattern by Cyrille at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BubbleStitch" target="_blank">BubbleStitch</a>. I scaled the block and trimmed it to meet the eight by nine inch requirement, pieced the number on the ear tag from a fat quarter of <a href="http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=4f63c07c-be24-4f23-a5aa-ea0f3bc3bc71&cm_mmc=Google-_-Prodcuts-_-Products+Listings-_-Ads&gclid=COuMo4bYm7kCFdAWMgodmHMAgA" target="_blank">Moda's "Ten Little Things"</a> I picked up on the shop hop, and added a flange to the binding. The back has a sleeve to fit a paint stir stick. My ACE Hardware one was salvaged from a free fan I got a few years ago at the fair so I thought it would be fitting for it to get a return trip. The back and the front were quilted separately and then stitched together with the button and the binding. I used fusible fleece, interfacing and bamboo batting for stability and puffiness.<br />
<br />
Once I finished, I read through the needle- and handcrafts booklets and decided to enter two more items I had on-hand. For quilting category #222, "Wall appliquéd; machine-quilted by applicant" I used my Madrona Road mug rug, "Taking Flight".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v2QaziZLEEM/UhuVvK_oaII/AAAAAAAABHE/xuURqiHRIuc/s1600/FallingBooksCollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v2QaziZLEEM/UhuVvK_oaII/AAAAAAAABHE/xuURqiHRIuc/s640/FallingBooksCollage.jpg" width="640" /></a>For handcraft category #745, "Stuffed fabric toy animal, other than bear, made by exhibitor, under 15 inches," I entered <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/2013/04/another-new-friend.html" target="_blank">Dresden the horse</a> which I posted about earlier.<br />
<br />
My aunt Deb (the lovely lady who made my Christmas stocking so many years ago) also went to the fair on opening day. She called me just after nine in the morning, asking questions about the little pink colt I entered. After my description, she informed me I won a blue ribbon. I was in the horse barn at the time -- jumping up and down and squealing. When I got over there, this is what happened:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fXcgCmHb8es/UhuTMCzl9OI/AAAAAAAABG0/zjlPUKNEIZI/s1600/Ribbon+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="513" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fXcgCmHb8es/UhuTMCzl9OI/AAAAAAAABG0/zjlPUKNEIZI/s640/Ribbon+Collage.jpg" width="640" /></a>After that phone call, the fair was even better than ever; I had a goofy perma-grin on my face that just wouldn't go away. I didn't expect to win anything, I just hoped my things would be displayed so I could check that box in my life goals list but now I think I'm seriously hooked. I want everybody to enter something in the fair; it's so much fun to become even more involved with something you love.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EaNOUYx38Po/Uhuf_MOYEzI/AAAAAAAABHo/fx5feOiw70g/s1600/IMG_7540.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EaNOUYx38Po/Uhuf_MOYEzI/AAAAAAAABHo/fx5feOiw70g/s320/IMG_7540.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
We had a great time at the fair but I only have a few photos to prove it; I'm always having too much fun to remember to snap. I did get a couple of my favorite quilts though. (By the way, these are mostly photos taken through glass in buildings with OLD lighting so be forgiving.)<br />

I loved this immense seed sack collection there.<br />

If you've never been to the Minnesota State Fair, you should go. If you are a regular, then you probably want to compare food lists. Here's ours: Minneapple Diner's Minnepumkin pie, Ole's Pistachio Cannoli, Swedish coffee, West Indies' chicken pasty, olives on a stick, roasted sweetcorn, Giggles' grilled salmon, honey sunflower seed ice cream, and Sweet Martha's chocolate chip cookies with ice cold milk. I'd also recommend the Minnesota Historical Society's free walking tour (you get prize!) This last part might be too tricky to plan but we just happened to hop off the SkyGlider's north end to sing the Great Sing-Along's last song of the night and after the laser show we hopped back on headed south just in time to watch the Grandstand fireworks while our feet dangled above the treetops. It was a magnificent and romantic end to a super fun day. If I can finagle it, I'm going back to pick up a free yardstick and admire those quilts a little more. The fair goes through Labor Day, so you still have a chance to catch it this year.<br />

Only a couple more photos. Here's a cathedral window quilt from Anoka County, Minnesota. After seeing it at the fair, mom and I made our first cathedral window blocks for the upcoming <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/p/block-of-month.html" target="_blank">MMQG September block lottery</a>. Holy moly that quilt must have taken some serious work!<br />

<br />
The deadline came and went last night as I put together my envelope blocks for the "You've Got Mail Wall Pocket" project on pages 90-95. I finished hand-stitching the binding today while I watered the garden at my parents' place. Coincidentally, I blame my lateness on them as they generously provide a lake cabin for our amusement nearly every weekend in the summer. Who can sit and sew when there is water to explore, fish to find, and campfires to build?<br />
<br />

I do wish I'd made it into the winner drawing as I really dropped the ball last week for the "Swedish Bloom Time Lap Quilt" on page 83. <br />
<br />
I even went down to the copy shop and printed all the templates but I only got one bloom made before the cabin beckoned and, well, I never finished the lonely little guy...Though I do adore him.<br />

My one consolation in this mess is that the mail pocket is done and it's rather beautiful, I think. The back is made up of the <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/p/block-of-month.html" target="_blank">Block Lotto</a> squares I won at this month's <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/" target="_blank">Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild</a> meeting. With only five, I was at a loss as to what to do with them but I think they are quite nice quilted up together.<br />
<br />
<br />
I also got to cut into some of my brand new stash acquired during the <a href="http://www.quiltminnesota.com/about-quilt-minnesota.php#works" target="_blank">Minnesota Quilt Shop Hop</a>. The <i>Rowan</i> hanging ribbons and envelope "insides" are from a <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/supplies/kaffe-charm-pack-shotcotton-lights/2526" target="_blank">Kaffe Fassett shot cotton charm pack</a> I found at <a href="http://www.grubersquiltshop.com/" target="_blank">Gruber's Quilt Shop</a> in Wait Park, Minnesota. This was my first ever shop hop experience and I made it to fourteen stops between August 2nd and the 18th. <br />
<br />
<br />
Gruber's was one of my favorites along with <a href="http://sweetgirlstudio.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Sweetwater Cotton Shoppe</a> in Paynesville (their antique-filled displays are fascinating!) and <a href="http://www.countryfabricsandquilting.com/" target="_blank">Country Fabrics and Quilting</a> in Brainerd (lots of Tula Pink, Anna Maria Horner, Echino... the list goes on!) <br />
<br />
I was pleasantly surprised with the modern fabrics available at many of the stops and the giveaways, snacks, and prizes were fun too. The spouse even joined in for a few shops - who doesn't love free refreshments, fabric, and road trips? <br />
<br />
Mom and I completed the "Lower Mid" section of the state and as a finisher's prize we got a rainbow of bobbins by Superior Threads (I used one of the aqua shades to finish the binding today -- and it made me feel like a winner.)<br />
<br />

Do you see that gridded flannel peaking out in the last photo? More about that coming soon.<br />
<br />
Hopefully this puts me back on the sewing track and it won't be so long before your hear from me again. Now it's time to stitch up another Zakka project and also to get ready for my favorite event of the year, the <b>Minnesota State Fair</b>! <br />

How long ago was the Modern Quilt Guild's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2105749@N24/" target="_blank">Madrona Road Challenge</a>? I must really be a quilter to let a project languish, unfinished for such a long spell and then revive it in a whirl of activity. I actually have more ideas and plenty of the fabric left but here's what I've gotten to so far:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBM3RERoUMVthmhaN6PSOJpzw9DkS01L962EfS_J8US8mnNldnZ_o16agaJI3Szcn6o6YMUbFO4dKMJSYqkQ-DjyWi5iaSZO8lanJH6Foh_NFBv1dItFowxd3_pwfzmsb58WOcQ6wAWoo/s1600/BooksPillowFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBM3RERoUMVthmhaN6PSOJpzw9DkS01L962EfS_J8US8mnNldnZ_o16agaJI3Szcn6o6YMUbFO4dKMJSYqkQ-DjyWi5iaSZO8lanJH6Foh_NFBv1dItFowxd3_pwfzmsb58WOcQ6wAWoo/s640/BooksPillowFront.jpg" width="640" /></a>First off, the latest project for the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/patchworkplease/" target="_blank">Zakka 2.0 sew along on Flickr</a>. The block pattern is "Books for Baby" from Ayumi Takahashi's book <b>Patchwork, Please!</b> I enlarged it slightly but left out the sashing and made a 17-inch pillow sham (for a 16" insert.)<br />
<br />
The open pages of the books read: "Good night," "Sweet dreams," "She tied," and "Loose threads."<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eU5jtTnffRw/UfJ0b0pXoyI/AAAAAAAABAg/G19CbmtD2jk/s1600/BooksPillowBack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eU5jtTnffRw/UfJ0b0pXoyI/AAAAAAAABAg/G19CbmtD2jk/s320/BooksPillowBack.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
For the back of the books pillow, I used two text prints I had on hand and appliquéd <a href="http://www.andchips.blogspot.com/2013/06/hexagami-handiwork.html" target="_blank">the hexies</a> I learned to English-paper-piece at the MplsMQG summer Sew-B-Q. Underneath the flap is a pink zipper. It's machine-quilted.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next up is my long-dormant challenge project. No longer an Unfinished Object!!! The center block is a foundation-pieced pattern by Cyrille of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/BubbleStitch" target="_blank">BubbleStitch</a>. You should check out her patterns; they are my favorites! This one is from her Goldilocks set but I call her, <i>Madrona</i>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYvU9EdGgkU6hCG7Nu3uii7pDc5RRCBtEPZacikFLu_ldHbCeTsueWAF30g8BNLBHBhVKQkFgEGm2fxXuSIFEUqLMlpV1pMs2pah_jx96GPAQrjDBGt18sjW9Rmn6PgfMYYWw4yxIjvMg/s1600/MadronaRoadPillowFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYvU9EdGgkU6hCG7Nu3uii7pDc5RRCBtEPZacikFLu_ldHbCeTsueWAF30g8BNLBHBhVKQkFgEGm2fxXuSIFEUqLMlpV1pMs2pah_jx96GPAQrjDBGt18sjW9Rmn6PgfMYYWw4yxIjvMg/s640/MadronaRoadPillowFront.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja-SPOsP4CU9GSKLpaTb3ZX42C0RNnlc2k21TUzZFCwPxc76hG4AfeJMZSgVz5I8HOrSLg-dlIIrEfGvY_auXSeOk1Vg_t_XzfmYCN6Zai8-k8mdSf6AuL5j0DHQXcA93lAmNY19aW_-w/s1600/MadronaRoadPillowBack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja-SPOsP4CU9GSKLpaTb3ZX42C0RNnlc2k21TUzZFCwPxc76hG4AfeJMZSgVz5I8HOrSLg-dlIIrEfGvY_auXSeOk1Vg_t_XzfmYCN6Zai8-k8mdSf6AuL5j0DHQXcA93lAmNY19aW_-w/s320/MadronaRoadPillowBack.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
You can see more of the house blocks on the back of the pillow. They are a pattern called "Circus Tents" from Kaffe Fassett's book, <b>Glorious Patchwork</b>. They are very easy to piece.<br />
This pillow cover is about 21 inches square; the insert is a 20" duck down pillow from IKEA.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCF-baj96q0if7c3eNpNQ3DYTfmEZlQJJoG6FHLE7c-mIrzWoaPv8pBq06Y75Sx_20ca4NJ4ck1c8LQefdGTWdq5UDfR8-w2dOYJ0ZlyTDK0fP_d8j9Rn3K1CgMrm_Um_NNPsxa7uiC3E/s1600/IMG_7401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCF-baj96q0if7c3eNpNQ3DYTfmEZlQJJoG6FHLE7c-mIrzWoaPv8pBq06Y75Sx_20ca4NJ4ck1c8LQefdGTWdq5UDfR8-w2dOYJ0ZlyTDK0fP_d8j9Rn3K1CgMrm_Um_NNPsxa7uiC3E/s320/IMG_7401.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Underneath the flap is an orange zipper and a little label I made out of the selvedge. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I just love Violet Craft's <a href="http://blog.violetcraft.com/2012/04/memoir-of-madrona-road.html" target="_blank">Madrona Road</a> fabric collection. It was the first fat quarter set I ever bought (of any designer fabric.) Later on, I couldn't believe my luck when the Modern Quilt Guild created the challenge and I got another fat quarter set (the blues and yellow solid) for free! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Originally, I planned a twin-sized quilt to go with this pillow. It would have more houses and two girl blocks. I still think about finishing that quilt idea but then again, I'd like to close out this Work-in-Progress. It feels good to be finished.<br />
<br />
Here's my next WIP. Do you recognize the fabric?<br />

Boo-hoo! Woe-is-me! Sob! Sniffle... But now I'm feeling much better and I remember the other downside to vacation: falling behind on my sewing! I missed a couple of great weeks in the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/patchworkplease/" target="_blank">Zakka 2.0</a> sew along on Flickr; the polka-dot cafe apron, the placemat, and the apple bib look so fun but I'm just in time for the <b>Dino-Mite Hat</b> on page 65.<br />
<br />
I did sew today. I <i>did not</i> make a dinosaur hat. I also <i>did not</i> make a baby hat. However, I did make a pillowcase dress and a very small velveteen hood with ears for my China Girl doll.<br />

I thought the movie was kind of meh...even if there was an <a href="http://annamariahorner.blogspot.com/2013/04/little-blossoms.html" target="_blank">Anna Maria Horner panel on one of the aprons</a> but I do enjoy the Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum weirdness in general, and I've spent a ton of time at <a href="http://www.dorothyshouse.com/" target="_blank">Dorothy's House</a> in Liberal, Kansas. I'm not really a doll collector but China Girl happens to be a thoughtfully made toy and she's pretty fun because she's 14 inches tall, jointed so she's posable, and she can stand on her own. Besides, she's from Oz and she's adorable and she keeps me company in the sewing room. Today I thought she might like a new outfit and so this is what we came up with. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDEEz3vFvuJ3ptS9aMgFY3k45ROXNYgvmNRQ-jT6pGlc07MBI7u-eIQYRwnA_Lc376EwgqVfD42v1PZu2mntb6UlIrHJfN2BCQ8oO9_Cu5bp2pwlQXYi4QbVV7FFlvuXoLiL9EL8wPMQM/s1600/Fronthat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDEEz3vFvuJ3ptS9aMgFY3k45ROXNYgvmNRQ-jT6pGlc07MBI7u-eIQYRwnA_Lc376EwgqVfD42v1PZu2mntb6UlIrHJfN2BCQ8oO9_Cu5bp2pwlQXYi4QbVV7FFlvuXoLiL9EL8wPMQM/s400/Fronthat.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
The dress is a simple pillowcase style made from two 10-inch squares of a novelty print from Joann's. I used three different trims and her belt secures with a bra hook. <br />
Her hat is a variation of the style from Ayumi's pattern in <b>Patchwork, Please!</b> but I had to draft it myself to be boxier since CG has molded hair and all. Instead of dinosaur spikes down the middle, I just folded triangular ears into the darts.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4CO-WxYEzzc/UecQqIf7IGI/AAAAAAAAA_0/ixAuHD1extg/s1600/Backhat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4CO-WxYEzzc/UecQqIf7IGI/AAAAAAAAA_0/ixAuHD1extg/s400/Backhat.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Yes, it was inspired by Little Red Riding Hood and her nemesis, the Big Bad Wolf. <br />
I guess there's a mix of styles going on here...Sort of 1970's <i>Little House on the Prairie</i> goes Harajuku lolita. Maybe CG is headed to a Renaissance festival or something.<br />
<br />
Anywho. There it is. Celebrating being able to breathe out of my nose by sewing for my dolly from stash scraps. <br />
<br />
<br />
Perhaps I'm making doll clothes because I didn't learn to sew as a kid and now I need to fill in the design experience gaps? In any case, it's like baby clothes: all the fun of sewing garments without the expense of so much fabric.<br />
<br />
It's really fun and I recommend it.<br />

Summer finally arrived in Minnesota and it is wonderful. Warm. Sunny. Sticky. Busy. I just got back from a week of raod-tripping and visiting family in Montana, Idaho, and North Dakota. They were experiencing a little bit of that heat wave that hit the western United States last week...and let's just say that all the stores were out of fans and swimming pools. But it was gloriously fun and we saw lots of animals (see below) and now we came home with a new appreciation for air conditioning in the house!<br />

I haven't sewn much of anything for the last couple of weeks except for these last two blocks for the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2099379@N20/" target="_blank">Modern Stash Quilting Bee</a> on Flickr. The design is called <a href="http://rainbowharequilts.blogspot.com/2013/04/twirling-asterisk.html" target="_blank">Twirling Asterisk</a> and it's by Janine at Rainbow Hare Quilts. I drew up a quick template (it finishes at 11 inches.)<br />

<br />
Here are my versions of the Lettered Tea Cozy and the Teabag Pouch from Ayumi Takahashi's book <b>Patchwork, Please!</b>. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgml1Xch6idnL3yDlmtznnB8i9u111xdNGQeOMPNIjphEEh0iXpAeZVyZdFlGqHMFjXftlM5bL0xd9C6JtpvyRlf4ZyHStWAZsRuiMj6WJHPsB1iP4OsXe53-WqenM28vmOYrLHdH0ngDI/s1600/tea+cozy+back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgml1Xch6idnL3yDlmtznnB8i9u111xdNGQeOMPNIjphEEh0iXpAeZVyZdFlGqHMFjXftlM5bL0xd9C6JtpvyRlf4ZyHStWAZsRuiMj6WJHPsB1iP4OsXe53-WqenM28vmOYrLHdH0ngDI/s320/tea+cozy+back.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All Ready to Brew!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I did make a few teensy changes to the pattern. Mine is 3/4 inch shorter and has twill tape for the hanging loop and the binding. Also, I made a little "T" tea bag tag for trim and included two pockets on the backside to hold both the teabag pouch and <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/2013/06/joining-in-zakka-20.html" target="_blank">the bell pepper coasters from week one</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
The teabag pouch is my favorite:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH8Fg7qxB78qCcA9RucYM-ToGX474RwpLxq7Xhjfut2DywcJ0Rt9c8OsLUPJ1fKDFdwovQcdmVI1VWG-C0TnhAL9yg0xf01l8_0fkQi6S-pYyvyv-oVygy5zfSDvjyq4GAW9BB2uosajs/s1600/Teabag+Pouch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH8Fg7qxB78qCcA9RucYM-ToGX474RwpLxq7Xhjfut2DywcJ0Rt9c8OsLUPJ1fKDFdwovQcdmVI1VWG-C0TnhAL9yg0xf01l8_0fkQi6S-pYyvyv-oVygy5zfSDvjyq4GAW9BB2uosajs/s640/Teabag+Pouch.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I really could have made use of this when I was a commuter college student. As an avid coffee and tea drinker, I had bad luck sometimes with tea getting smooshed in the bottom of my backpack. (I do own <a href="http://www.bananaguard.com/products" target="_blank">one of these</a>, thank you very much!)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeuf_qJSmAkP1hYD6t1Q4YRGsQZnJcg4hHVoYZaE4e0Vthm1cLYdoNn-rjZqHrogQis2EVZGWE3r7ivnUeK2Sd-cQWzYdYAMltxUvnnfxIqwf2YPJh4J2Y-L7SFhGQNYdZNbhmuVoSXxM/s1600/IMG_7283.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeuf_qJSmAkP1hYD6t1Q4YRGsQZnJcg4hHVoYZaE4e0Vthm1cLYdoNn-rjZqHrogQis2EVZGWE3r7ivnUeK2Sd-cQWzYdYAMltxUvnnfxIqwf2YPJh4J2Y-L7SFhGQNYdZNbhmuVoSXxM/s400/IMG_7283.jpg" width="300" /></a>The tea cozy is quilted with variegated Aurifil Mako cotton (I'm finally using <i>the good stuff </i>!) It striped nicely but obviously I need to address some tension issues with my machine before getting too fancy.<br />
<br />
That's it until next week. <br />

Besides embroidery and finishing projects -- stitching up stuffing holes and quilt binding backs -- I don't usually tote around <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/missenota/7700842990/in/set-72157630970751102" target="_blank">my needlebook</a> and thread but I think I'm up for it.<br />

On Saturday a few of us got together for a Sew-B-Q (a sewing barbeque! Get it?) Lisa of <a href="http://www.pixiespit.com/" target="_blank">Pixie Spit </a>played an excellent hostess and we had a lot of fun stitching in the sunshine, getting to know each other, and learning to spray baste with 505 (it's a miracle!) <br />

Then as it got cloudy, we piled into her studio's beautiful stash lair to touch <i>everything</i>! It was awesome. She has great taste; she literally doesn't have a single bolt, bundle, or ribbon I don't covet...and that has never happened to me in a LQS. (Take a look at her Etsy shop, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/freshstash" target="_blank">Fresh Stash</a>, to see what I mean.) <br />
<br />
I did not come home with the Heather Ross -gasp!- but I did pick up a nifty half-yard bundle of <a href="http://iheartlinen.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Rashida Coleman-Hale</a>'s iHeart linen blend and Kaffe Fassett ribbon. (Did you know his name rhymes with "safe assett"?)<br />
<br />
Anywho, back to the Q.<br />
<br />
Each member received a neat little package of notions from the guild, including punch-cut hexagons in three sizes for English paper piecing, fancy threads (Aurifil 50 weight cotton and Bottom Line 60 weight polyester), Milliner needles (John James Gold'n Glide sizes 10 & 11), a washable glue stick, Clover Wonder Clips, and a mini charm pack to play with!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Neat-oh!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
This alone makes joining a guild worthwhile because not only do we get free stuff, and support, and advice, and organization... but then we get to see what everyone makes with it (and there are <i>geniuses</i> in this group!) The challenge reveal isn't until September but in between chewing cookies and sipping beer, I did sew up my very first hexies. I went with the 3/4 inchers:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SkK9kMTmPSQ/UbDD_0_5sII/AAAAAAAAA2U/qIjfjnUJ5rA/s1600/IMG_7219.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SkK9kMTmPSQ/UbDD_0_5sII/AAAAAAAAA2U/qIjfjnUJ5rA/s400/IMG_7219.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cute, huh?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So I'll admit, since then, I've been working on other things such as the <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/2013/06/joining-in-zakka-20.html" target="_blank">Zakka 2.0 sew along</a>. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2AREVt0_u9M/UbDKoALRIGI/AAAAAAAAA2k/giKQ2jxNNpQ/s1600/Hexagami2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2AREVt0_u9M/UbDKoALRIGI/AAAAAAAAA2k/giKQ2jxNNpQ/s320/Hexagami2.jpg" width="320" /></a>But I did get out my trusty sewing kit this morning for a little project I found at <a href="http://www.quiltscapesqs.com/2013/06/making-splash-and-giveaway.html" target="_blank">Quiltscapes</a>. The tutorial for Hexagami is <a href="http://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/cutting-corners/2013/06/03/hexagami/" target="_blank">here</a> at Riley Blake Designs and the project is very easy; I made mine in about 20 minutes (it really takes less time but I had to pick out fabric, starch it, choose a button, find my hexagon template, etc., etc.) <br />
<br />
I started with a 3.25 inch (one short edge) hexagon and it folded down to a 1.5 inch. Then I added a pin to the back. I've never tried a method like this but it was just as easy as folding a paper airplane and sewing a button.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you pressed/starched/cut your hexies ahead of time, these would make a great "Take it with You" project for the summer.<br />

<br />
This is me. Singing out. Joining my voice with all you other crafty people on the web in the Zakka 2.0 Sew Along <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/patchworkplease/" target="_blank">on Flickr</a> and linking up <a href="http://lrstitched.com/patchwork-please-sew-along/" target="_blank">at LRStitched</a>. Taking on every project in <a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Ayumi Takahashi's</a> new book, <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Patchwork-Please-Colorful-Projects-Stitch/dp/1596685999" target="_blank">Patchwork, Please!</a><i> </i></b><br />
<i><b><br /></b></i>
The first project (pictured above) is the Bell Pepper Coaster. They are really adorable and easy to make. In fact, it took me longer to choose my fabrics than to put them together. I liked learning a new technique - they are sewn and then cut to flip - the cuts are hidden when you sew the two layers together. I can see this might be handy in making art quilts.<br />
<i><b><br /></b></i>As for the sew along...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Will I be sewing <u>every</u> project?</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All I can say is: I've got a plan. So stay tuned. And come sing along with your sewing machine.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

(If you were a midcentury teen girl in America you might remember the covers of all our novels had similar-style illustrations.) <br />

(if you don't know about it, look to the right on this very page for an image of Tom Selleck.) Now, not my hive, but another hive in the bee is making sewn flags for Boston - a project headed up by the <a href="http://vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca/blog/2013/04/to-boston-with-love/" target="_blank">Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild</a>. I just love the idea of sending a little bit of quilty goodness their way after such a horrible thing happened and I love that a gal in my bee was selfless enough to suggest her blocks should go there and finally, as a member of a Minnesota Modern Quilt Guild - I thought I should represent - so I decided to make this:<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4txAMp5PADPDSxa5ug7Cc7dEIApHKdvw6-32TkHrU6ax50_67WPD6yYKYMZHeFAQTSIl3HOEjD7wPiH-oEBVNVJs60b5-bVcR1ooy9_3P5cpedsFNtRBjNR4Pi287NwVmhLWcaZsdfEs/s1600/BostonFlag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4txAMp5PADPDSxa5ug7Cc7dEIApHKdvw6-32TkHrU6ax50_67WPD6yYKYMZHeFAQTSIl3HOEjD7wPiH-oEBVNVJs60b5-bVcR1ooy9_3P5cpedsFNtRBjNR4Pi287NwVmhLWcaZsdfEs/s640/BostonFlag.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My contribution (front and back)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
First, I drew a boston terrier. Hey, it's what popped into my head (that and also the Dropkick Murphys song I used to title this post.) I've got these cats, see, and no dog but I love dogs and though I know very little about them, boston terriers seem adorable and tough at the same time. That's what I want for Boston - <u>adorable</u> and <u>tough</u> - so there you go.<br />
<br />
Then I picked some cheery colors out of the scrap bin and for me, the cheeriest of colors is a nice, bright yellow. (Back when I sold camping equipment for a living, I liked to relate to customers that winter and mountain tents are so often sun-hued as it's the color most likely to keep you from falling into depression when you're trapped inside it.) But I digress.<br />
<br />
I really like the way my pup turned out; I don't draw enough! I was going to cut out the whites of her eyes too but thought she looked good this way. It's raw-edge appliquéd with a hand-written label, heat-set on the back.<br />
<br />
Only six by eight inches but I think it says what I want to say and that is:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>"To Boston with Love from Minnesota."</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
& Chips</div>
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fWhyIFMxJ74/UZah8Nj3-9I/AAAAAAAAAzU/cQKPV3jHfHY/s1600/IMG_7106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fWhyIFMxJ74/UZah8Nj3-9I/AAAAAAAAAzU/cQKPV3jHfHY/s320/IMG_7106.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here's a pic of the <b>real</b> colors - I just love filters!</td></tr>

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jIEHQ9C0Qzo/UcCBHdcKElI/AAAAAAAAA-Y/xf256HOwTMk/s1600/PrettyPins.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jIEHQ9C0Qzo/UcCBHdcKElI/AAAAAAAAA-Y/xf256HOwTMk/s640/PrettyPins.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
It's not difficult to create your own pretty straight pins. They are fast, easy, and make thoughtful gifts. Pincushions and needle books are fun for swaps but they are infinitely more attractive with some custom pins.<br />
<br />
Here's how to do-it-yourself:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZuxUGY86uv6LP4z8QkT2gjxDQvCTNmzWBdf20ERnOACzN97ZH61KG-z6a1D8yvHwbdmuHheWRPXgEdC5gC-76FZxi1FkFZlLRMc_Q1CdOsuux1eNBqFgC9aBJDnJJCMDT1BPjsTy9Uo/s1600/Pintutorial.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZuxUGY86uv6LP4z8QkT2gjxDQvCTNmzWBdf20ERnOACzN97ZH61KG-z6a1D8yvHwbdmuHheWRPXgEdC5gC-76FZxi1FkFZlLRMc_Q1CdOsuux1eNBqFgC9aBJDnJJCMDT1BPjsTy9Uo/s640/Pintutorial.png" width="640" /></a><br />
Step 1: <b>Gather Materials</b><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Straight pins. </li>
<ul>
<li>I like long, glass head, quilting pins but this is up to you.</li>
</ul>
<li>Beads. Go wild!</li>
<li>Adhesive. </li>
<ul>
<li>I use <a href="http://www.eclecticproducts.com/e6000_retail.htm" target="_blank">E-6000</a> (Found at many craft and hardware stores...and just good to have around the house.)</li>
</ul>
<li>Toothpicks or other applicators.</li>
<li>Surface protection. </li>
<ul>
<li>I put down some paper to protect the work space and dispose of sticky toothpicks.</li>
</ul>
<li>Drying "rack." </li>
<ul>
<li>Pincushion or a placemat/towel/small quilt hung over the back of a chair works too.</li>
</ul>
</ul>
<br />
Step 2: <b>Glue It</b><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Apply a dab of adhesive to the base of the pin head. </li>
<li>Slide on a bead and press into the glue for a few seconds. </li>
<li>Repeat for a layered effect.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
Step 3: <b>Let if Dry</b><br />
You can make a ton or just a few.<br />
<br />
<b>Enjoy!</b><br />
<br />
<br />
As a housekeeping note, I'm claiming my blog with <i><b>Bloglovin</b></i>' today. I use it to follow bloggers whose work I enjoy; it compiles new posts in an easy format so I can browse everyone I like at one time. (It's a great way to spot trends in the blogosphere and keep up with sew alongs, giveaways, and news too.)<br />

This little colt is from the "Henry" pattern in Jill Hamor's lovely pattern book, <i><a href="http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=2712" target="_blank">Storybook Toys</a></i>. It's the first project I've made after more than a month of ooh-ing and aah-ing and generally drooling over the dollies within. I added an applique (the barn from Violet Craft's <i>Madrona Road</i>) but otherwise stuck straight to the pattern; one thing I might change would be to make the mane longer.<br />

I used fabric and yarn I had on hand but I still have the saddle to sew up. I can't get over how cute this little guy is! He stands well but his back legs splay out a little and it could be the direction I cut the fabric or uneven stuffing but his head tilts a tad. However, I believe these two <strike>mistakes</strike> <i>features</i> really add to the newborn foal appeal.</div>

Instead, I've been tinkering with smaller projects. I made a name tag (it's a secret!) and two blocks (four actually) for tomorrow's <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/" target="_blank">MMQG</a> meeting. </div>

It's also my month as QUEEN BEE in the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2099379@N20/pool/" target="_blank">Modern Stash Quilting Bee</a> on Flickr. I picked an original paper-piecing pattern by Marcia Hohn at Quilter's Cache; it's called <a href="http://www.quilterscache.com/T/TallahasseeBlock.html" target="_blank">the Tallahassee</a> block and I'm really pleased with my first few tries at it.<br />

I call them "Blooms." Sewn together, four make a 12 inch block. The inspiration for all of this was the Quilter's Cache block I bookmarked almost one year ago (before I knew how to paper-piece!) and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jenniferlgb/8175953520/in/faves-missenota/" target="_blank">this pillow</a> made by Jennifer LGB on Flickr; it's one of my all time favorites in my "favorites" on Flickr.<br />
<br />
All month long, my quilting bee "hive" mates will be stitching up these little goodies for me; I can't wait until all those awesome little packages start to arrive! Did I mention my birthday is in April?Missenota aka Kristin S.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10204528240445570592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441453790331408350.post-54548763913595101352013-03-25T13:32:00.000-07:002013-03-25T13:34:13.008-07:00Thrift Stop<br />

That's it. Happy thrifting!<br />

If you're one of those people (and I'm beginning to think that means EVERYONE) who hates honey-oak trim, beige carpet and white walls - well - you're not going to like it at my house. But to me, it's a gallery space with warmth and a place where every color looks just right.<br />
<br />
<b>See more from my photo shoot over at the <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/2013/03/10-minute-tip-hang-that-quilt.html" target="_blank">MMQG blog</a> where I posted this week about hanging and displaying quilts.</b><br />
<br />
If you're sticking around to admire that purse in the photo, however, welcome! I got it in the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild's bag swap at our February meeting. A talented gal named Rozina made it and I couldn't love it more. I immediately dumped the contents of my purse into it, threw it over my shoulder and haven't looked back.<br />
<br />
Here's the one I made:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I followed the pattern except for adding this internal zipper pocket. I found <a href="http://www.vanillajoy.com/easy-zippered-pocket-tutorial.html" target="_blank">this tutorial</a> helpful.<br />

The prints are from IKEA; the black is duck cloth from JoAnn Fabric but I didn't like the way it faded when I ironed it. All in all a fun swap. We're doing name tags next. Stay tuned!<br />

You take eight materials off the list they give you and using only those eight (as well as glue, wire, etc.) make a little something for the contest.<br />
<br />
The eight materials I chose (because I already had them on hand) were:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Acrylic paint</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Felt</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Wooden beads</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Chenille stems</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Ribbon</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Buttons</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Unfinished wood shapes</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Yarn</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So of course I made a clothespin doll couple ready for Oktoberfest... <br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
...Of course I did.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
These took me several hours yesterday and another half hour this morning. My process went like this: gather supplies, stare at supplies, make drawing, paint, varnish, tie tiny bows, braid yarn hair, glue, cut, stitch, fit, cut, glue, dry, admire.<br />
<br />
